Early morning sketching at Lochcarron
Tracing still life into landscape compositions

Bio

When out walking I immerse myself in the beautiful

surroundings, either sketching, taking photos or just observing. I'm always amazed at how often the light can change over a short space of time and reshape the landscape.

Closer observation can reveal intricate crevices in rock faces holding tiny flowers, or tidal rivulets swirling around the rock pools. I’m always keen to seek out and record these small details and discover how they interact with each other.

The freedom and energy that I observe when I'm in the natural world inspires me to communicate this through my work, and I find that by working with mixed media it gives the same feeling of spontaneity. I like to apply the mediums with found objects such as twigs and splinters of driftwood as they give some surprising natural results.

Collage papers also play a large part in disrupting the surface, and I make these with inks and mulberry tissue (naturally shed bark) embedded with dried seaweed. The collage then becomes interwoven within the painting to create layers and depth to characterise the landscape. I also use pages from my old travel book to root a sense of place within my work.
